October 3:   Hidden Valley Wineries Barrel Tasting   NEW!
Wine lovers who want a peek behind the curtain into the world of winemaking will have a rare opportunity to meet the winemakers and taste premium wines directly from the barrel during the 2009 Fall Barrel Tasting, hosted by four prominent North County wineries. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 3.

Participating wineries are Belle Marie Winery, Bernardo Winery, Cordiano Winery and Deer Park Winery, all part of a newly formed alliance called the Hidden Valley Wineries.

Passports, pre-sold for $35 each, will entitle bearers to visit each of the four wineries on the day of the event. Guests can start at any winery and proceed in any order. They will receive a commemorative wine glass to use throughout the day and then to keep. At each of the wineries, guests will be able to sample two wines directly from the barrels, each of which will be paired with a gourmet bite to eat. Guests will also be able to taste three special, bottled wines at each winery, which will be either limited release or library wines.

“We decided to do a barrel tasting for our first joint event because most people who appreciate wine have a natural curiosity about how it is made, but never get the chance to experience it before the finished product is ready for release,” said Mick Dragoo, proprietor of Belle Marie Winery in Escondido. “Making wine is both an art and a science, and wineries are very individual in their styles and techniques. This is sort of a backstage pass for people to learn more about the process, to try some unfinished wine and to get some insight into the theory and philosophy of the winemaker.”

Jeff Lazenby, general manager at Belle Marie, said he is proud to be part of the new Hidden Valley Wineries alliance. “We are all family-owned, boutique wineries that concentrate on producing premium-quality wines, and we are all devoted to treating our guests like friends and family,” he said. “Visitors to any of the Hidden Valley Wineries will find a relaxed, casual atmosphere; not the scores of tour busses, deep lines at the tasting bar, and impersonal service that are all too common in some other wine regions.”

"Better yet," he said, "the Hidden Valley Wineries are conveniently located in Escondido and Rancho Bernardo, just 20 minutes from downtown San Diego."
